Start with 10%, always
Every mental percentage starts the same way: find 10% by moving the decimal point one spot to the left. 10% of $84 is $8.40. 10% of $126 is $12.60. That's the whole trick. No division, no formula.
Once you have 10%, you can build almost anything from it:
- 20% is 10% doubled. Tip on an $84 dinner: $8.40 times two, so about $17.
- 5% is 10% cut in half. So 5% of $126 is $6.30.
- 15% is 10% plus half of that. $8.40 plus $4.20 gives you $12.60.
- 30% is 10% times three. A 30%-off jacket listed at $90? The discount is $27, so you pay $63.
Notice you never calculated the "hard" percentage directly. You built it out of easy pieces. That's how people who seem fast at math actually do it.
The flip trick
Here's the one that feels like a magic trick: X% of Y is always equal to Y% of X. Sounds useless until you meet a problem like "what's 4% of 75?" Ugh. Flip it: 75% of 4 is 3. Done. Same with 16% of 25 — flip it to 25% of 16, which is a quarter of 16, so 4. Whenever a percentage problem looks ugly, flip it and check whether the other direction is easy. About half the time it is.
Sales tax without suffering
Say your local tax is 7%. On a $60 purchase: 10% would be $6, so 7% is a bit less, around $4.20. You don't need the exact figure at the shelf. You need to know whether the $60 item costs $64 or $70 at the register, and "a bit less than $6" answers that. Estimation is a legitimate skill, not cheating. Cashiers' screens exist for the exact number.
One warning from the other direction: when a store says "take an extra 20% off already-reduced prices," the discounts don't add. A $100 item at 30% off, then 20% off the reduced price, costs $56, not $50. The second discount applies to $70, not $100. Stores know most shoppers add the percentages. Now you're not most shoppers.
Restaurant math you're allowed to be lazy about
Tipping does not deserve precision. On a $47.80 check, call it $48, or honestly call it $50. Want to tip around 18%? 10% is $5, 20% is $10, so land anywhere between and you're fine. Some people compute tips to the cent and hold up the table doing it. The waiter would rather have a fast $9 than a slow $8.61. When mental math isn't the tool
Percent change is where heads start to hurt: "my rent went from $1,340 to $1,470, what's that in percent?" You can estimate it (the jump is $130, which is close to 10% of $1,340), but for the exact answer, or anything involving reverse percentages like "what was the price before the 15% discount," use the percentage calculator. Mental math is for speed at the register. The calculator is for accuracy when it counts.
Practice on real life: next receipt, guess the tax before you see it. Next sale rack, figure the price before checking the tag. Two weeks of that and this stuff is automatic.
